Ruth was born in Nottingham, studied art and design at Bournemouth College of Art & Design where Ruth obtained a HND in Costume Design. Since 1997 Ruth has lived and worked in London. Ruth has always loved to draw and paint since childhood and has been able to carry this creativity into adulthood
In 2017, Ruth attended printmaking classes at Thames-side Print Studio under the tuition of Master Printmaker Nick Richards, and found the process of etching to be both intriguing and highly satisfying. Read about the history of the process here: intaglio printmaking. Ruth became a member of Thames-side Printmakers in 2018 and continue to practise there.
Using dip pens inherited from her maternal grandfather, Ruth sketches and studies everyday objects, exploring their shapes and forms. Ruth’s technique is to draw directly into the hardground on steel, zinc or copper, this achieves a delicate line, which when etched is very truthful to the original marks made. Ruth also use other techniques, such as aquatint, dry point, monoprint.
‘I love the process and the problem solving’, says Ruth, ‘always learning something new, how different metals etch at different speeds depending on the time of year. How to handle, protect and preserve metal, the use of soft and hard grounds, creating surface tone, how different metal affects certain colour inks and using different colour combinations and textured paper.
When I pulled my first intaglio print I was astonished. I found the delight in revealing the print from the plate. I was a little bit like magic.’
